Egmont Key

Florida

Egmont Key Lighthouse, Florida

We have journeyed to St. Petersburg, FL for years, usually staying at one of the resorts on St. Pete Beach, for vacation and business trips alike, and have often watched the Egmont Key light at night as it helps guide vessels safely into Tampa Bay.

The best vantage point from land to view the lighthouse is Fort DeSoto State Park, just a few miles off the Pinellas Bayway. This beautiful park boasts wonderful wildlife viewing, tropical vegetation, a superb view of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, hiking trails, and a modern fishing pier. This photo was taken (with a strong zoom lens) from the pier. Egmont Key is approximately two miles from the park.

There are tours from St. Petersburg and elsewhere that provide access to the island.

A number of years ago, the top of the lighthouse was removed, and the light was replaced with an avaition-style beacon.
